Modern Performance 7-18-09 Meet

Modern Performance held a Neon, Neon SRT4, Chevrolet Cobalt, and Caliber SRT4 meet on 7-18-09 and we had in excess of 60 cars show up.

The meet took place in Houston, Texas at Modern Performance’s office/warehouse.

MP hosted the meet in the heigth of July, which is one of the hottest months of the year, and it was a challenge to keep everyone cool when it was 90-100 degrees outside!

Throughout the day, we had the following show up at the meet :
7-8 1995-1999 Dodge Neons
2-3 2000-2005 Dodge Neons
40-45 2003-2005 Dodge SRT-4’s
4-5 2008-2009 Dodge Caliber SRT-4’s
2-3 2005-2009 Chevrolet Cobalts

We didnt take count of how many people showed up, but it would not be suprising if we had in excess of 75-100 people.

Throughout the day, MP provided :
320 Cokes, Sprites, Bottled waters
75 cookies
15 Large Pepperoni, Hamburger, and Cheese pizzas

At the end of the day, there were NO food, or drinks leftover!

Here we have Ryans 97 Neon with 2.4 turbo being run on Megasquirt. Its really a miracle that Ryan was able to piece this car together, get it running, and idling with Megasquirt! Right next to it, is our project 2008 Dodge Caliber SRT4.

Mopar Manual trans fluid in stock for 95-05 Neon, 03-05 SRT-4, 08+ Caliber SRT-4

We get a lot of calls from customers asking what type of oil they should be using for their vehicles, due to confusion at local dealerships. So, to make it easier, we have stocked up on plenty of Mopar Official manual transmission fluid and we can ship it right to your doorstep to make it easier.

So now, when youve got a good amount of mileage on your car, or are doing a clutch job and want to refresh the manual trans fluid in your car you can get the correct fluid from Modern Performance!

Now, we are listing this fluid as Manual transmission fluid, however the label shows ATF+4 in the picture and you might be a little puzzled. Mopar used ATF+4 in all of the manual transmission Neons, Neon SRT-4’s as well as Caliber SRT-4’s and so as weird as it might seem, this is the right stuff!

2008-2009 Caliber SRT-4 – Fill Capacity 4 Quarts of ATF+4

Please note: This is the fluid recommended by Mopar for the vehicles above. If you drive your car very hard, a Chrysler Engineer that we work with quite a bit has recommended the use of Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w/30 with ZDDP or Zinc dithiophosphate which helps protect the gear surfaces better under high heat conditions. You can find the ZDDP labeling on the back of the container.

Matt our employee is reunited with his 98 Neon!

Matts 98 Plymouth Neon EX without AC !!

Matt, our employee who recently moved from Holland, Michigan was seperated from his 98 Plymouth Neon by nearly 1100 miles.

After suffering from Neon withdrawal over a period of almost 3 years, he finally decided to bring his 98 Plymouth Neon to Houston.

Now, what makes this so special is due to several factors.

1) Matts Neon is a NON AC car, and he lives in Houston. It regularly gets to be 105 degrees during summer.

2) Matts Neon is Black, and is going to absorb TONS of 105 degree heat in the summer time.

Good luck with that Matt! Now that we’re past the NON ac part, heres the rest of what makes this car so unique.

Normally, NON AC cars will be stripper models, with hubcaps, no spoiler, sohc motor with manual transmission. However, Matts Neon has a DOHC engine, Manual transmission, Sport wheels, and a spoiler. It also has manual windows and locks. So, other than having no side moldings, and no AC, it appears to be a Plymouth Expresso.  However, it gets even weirder that his car was bought with a painted non fog light bumper. Almost all Dohc Neons came with fog light bumpers, and side moldings.

Perhaps the first owner pulled the side moldings off and replaced a damaged fog light bumper with a non fog light bumper.

Either way, we’re happy to have another Neon at MP, especially such a clean bodied, Dohc, Manual Neon!

Here are some photos of the engine bay. LOOK AT HOW STOCK THIS ENGINE BAY LOOKS!!! Stock air snorkel, battery cover, even the battery cover strap! For most of Neon enthusiasts, we havent seen a stock engine bay in YEARS! Hehe!

Look at how much room is in his engine bay as well due to there not being a AC compressor, and because of it having a half size radiator and half size radiator fan. Its VERY rare to see a half size radiator and fan in a Neon, let alone coupled with a Dohc engine!

1995 Dodge Neon NYG ACR gets SRT4 seats ! (SRT-4 Viper Style Seat Swap into Neon)

For those of you who may not be familiar with MP’s project cars, heres the vehicles we currently own for testing and development of parts:

In this post, we’re going to post photos and discuss the new seats we swapped into our 1995 NYG Neon!

We decided to get more supportive/comfortable seats for the NYG, and so we called up a local junkyard that had a 03 Neon SRT4 they were parting out. We were able to score the two front seats, and rear upper and lower seats for $250 which is a STEAL!

The front seats have very supportive side bolsters which is great for cornering, and they are also adjustable (unlike our old fixed back Corbeau seats we installed for weight savings!)

For any of you (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999) Neon owners out there that want a set of seats that are a MAJOR upgrade to the factory 95-99 Neon seats, these are a DIRECT SWAP in. Meaning, NO cutting, No bending, just remove the old seats and install these! It might be hard to find these in junkyards, and or they might fetch a lot of money on Ebay but its well worth it in our opinion!

Front seats – perfect fit, no rubbing on doors, no issues at all!

Older News – Crane Cams no longer in business

Older News – Crane Cams no longer in business-

For those of you who may have missed this update from late last month/beginning of this month, Crane Cams is no longer in business.

This is pretty big news for MP, as we relied on Crane Cams for their lineup of camshafts and valvetrain for the 03-05 Dodge SRT-4 ,95-05 Dodge Neon Dohc and Sohc , as well as the 95-99 Mitsubishi Eclipse NON Turbo.

Have no fear though! Crower has stepped up and we have replaced the whole Crane cams lineup with Crower camshafts, Crower valve springs, and Crower Valve spring and Titanium retainers! PLUS, Crowers camshafts are $369 versus most Crane cams being $429+, and SRT4/Neon Crower valve springs are $75 versus Crane valve springs costing $99+!

The only downside, is that Crower does NOT make 95-99 Dodge Neon SOHC components, so we no longer have any camshafts, or valve springs for the Sohc Neon.
